Financial giving is an important part of Christian discipleship and we encourage anyone who has made a commitment to follow Jesus within our Parish community to prayerfully and consistently give financially.
180 people in our parish community choose to do this by monthly standing order in amounts ranging from £10 to over £500 a month to help meet the cost of the work God has called us to in Glossop and beyond.
Once a year we speak about the Biblical principle of giving 10% of our income back to God (we suggest after tax) for his mission in the world, the needs of the worldwide Christian family and the needs of the poor in all areas of our world.
Should you decide to make St James’ or St Luke’s church your home it would be great if you would prayerfully consider working towards that figure of 10% of your income in your adventure of faith and discipleship. Some people give the whole 10% to Whitfield Parish and others give some of that figure to the Parish and the rest to other organisations as they see fit. Some people even go beyond that figure but whatever you choose to do before God we like to bear the words of St Paul in mind:
“Give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).
How do I give to Whitfield Parish?
This is a simple and the best option for those who want their giving to be regular and consistent. It also reduces our admin costs and helps with budgeting. Please complete a standing order mandate and send it to the church office in an envelope addressed to the Treasurer. Nobody except for the Treasurer and Gift Aid Secretary see any values of monies given to the church . To obtain a standing order mandate please contact Ann Williams (Treasurer) on firstname.lastname@example.org
Cheques and Cash
Weekly offerings can be placed in the plate at the back of each of our churches or one off donations posted to the church office. Cheques should be made payable to ‘Whitfield PCC’.
What is Gift Aid?
If you are a UK taxpayer, Whitfield Parish is able to reclaim a further 25% of the value of your gift. For us to be able to claim tax back on your gifts, you need to complete a gift aid declaration which you can do by printing out and completing a declaration and sending it to the church office addressed to the Gift Aid secretary. To obtain a gift aid declaration form please contact Ann Williams (Treasurer) on email@example.com
What Happens to the Money?
At Whitfield Parish, good stewardship of people’s giving is a high priority. The PCC regularly monitor the financial position of the church and the financial systems in place and operate to agreed annual budgets.
All monies are used to continue with the upkeep and operation of both churches and the Vineyard, pay our staff team, pay our Church of England quota, donate to resource mission at home and overseas and importantly, to grow our mission of reaching and transforming our town with the love of Jesus.
So where does our money go? Here are the budget headlines from 2017 where has cost £219k to run our parish:
Church of England Quota | £78K
This gives us a full time minister (salary £26k), and which we still have to pay in the vacancy period. It also gives us our curate, Dan for the next year, who we get for free. It also contributes to running the Diocese and the Church of England. As a larger and richer parish we pay more in order to enable God’s work in poorer smaller C of E Churches. This figure is set by the Diocese of Derby. This year we have seen our quota rise and we will see another next year £80,752.
Staff Salaries, Training & Expenses | 50K
This enables us to employ a Parish Operations Manager, Schools and Young Families Outreach Pastor, Youth Co-ordinator and cleaning staff all on a part-time basis to support and lead us in the mission of the parish. We also use this money to train staff and volunteers reimbursing them in full for the cost of ministry in our parish.
Buildings & Housekeeping | £60k
This is what it costs to run St James’ Church, St Luke’s Church and The Vineyard buildings to be used for the glory of God including energy, insurance, music, admin, technology and general maintenance.
Local Mission | £9k
As we reach out to others this pays for ministry to children, youth, schools, seniors, general outreach such as the Easter Trail, Fun Day and Alpha, as well as our MATs on the High Street, Gamesley, Whitfield, St Luke’s Area, FLAME and the work on Shirebrook.
National & International Mission | £22k
We take God’s mission to the world seriously as we give one tenth of our income away to help finance God’s mission in this nation and abroad. Two thirds of the £22k goes to five mission partner projects and one third in the shape of smaller grants to about 16 organisations or individuals over the course of the year.
