Healthy Habit #6: Simplifying

Questions from today’s speaker. You can use some of these in Growth Groups or alone:

Read through Isaiah 55:1-9

  • How do you feel about the Jubilee Celebrations? Do you feel in any way inspired by the Queen’s faith in the King of Kings? (You can find the song video from the service here)
  • In what ways do you think our lives today have got more or less complicated?
    • What is good or bad about these things?
  • How might we ‘spend money on what is not bread and our labour on what does not satisfy’ (verse 2) today?
  • In what ways can too many possessions have an impact on our relationship with God?
  • Who do you picture when you think of someone who lives a ‘simple life’? Why?
  • What habits could you develop that would simplify your life to focus on more important things?

What can I pray for?

  • Give thanks and pray for the Queen as we celebrate the Jubilee – particularly give thanks for her faith and devotion to serving both God and country. You can find the song video from the service here
  • The Church of England has plenty of material for Thy Kingdom Come to encourage us to pray – particularly for people to discover Jesus. There is a playlist of videos here
  • This Pentecost, pray for God to pour out his Spirit on our church, such that we would show the fruit of the Spirit in the way we interact with one another and with our community.

How to Pray or Read the Bible

It’s good to get into a daily habit of daily prayer and reading the Bible. There are lots of ways to do this. We’ve given some suggestions on this website on ‘How can I pray?’ and ‘How can I read the Bible?’. If you need help, do ask us – we’d love to help!

How to Give to the Church

It’s also good to adopt a habit of regular giving to the chruch. If you would like to give money to the church – as a one-off gift or on a regular basis – then follow this link. Sorry that some of the information is out of date (pre-pandemic), but the form is still valid.

Recommended Reading for this Series

There are plenty of good books on ‘Healthy Habits’ (or Spiritual Disciplines). Here are a few:

  • The Life You’ve Always Wanted – by John Ortberg
  • Holy Habits – by Andrew Roberts
  • Celebration of Discipline – Richard Foster (an old classic)
